When disaster strikes, PepsiCo provides financial assistance, in-kind product donations and human resource contributions to help the people and communities affected.
PepsiCo responds to natural disasters with a variety of aid, some of which is highlighted here.
On February 27, 2010, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck Chile, killing nearly 500 people, impacting more than 2 million people and damaging 1.5 million homes. PepsiCo made a grant of $250,000 to Un Techo Para Mi Pais, a nonprofit organization founded in Chile and operating in 16 Latin American countries. The organization, which is run by university students and young professionals, constructs transitional houses and works with families in extreme poverty in a social inclusion process that will allow them to develop as a sustainable community. The funding will build 170 transitional homes in the region’s neediest areas, benefiting approximately 850 people.
In January 2010, PepsiCo, working with the PepsiCo Disaster Response Team and our Disaster Relief Strategic Partners, provided $1 million in support for Haitian earthquake disaster relief efforts.
PepsiCo provided grants to organizations that can best help all those impacted by the earthquake and its destruction, and divided a portion of its relief funds among three strategic partners:
PepsiCo contributed $100,000 to the American Red Cross in response to flooding in Asia. Fifty percent of this amount went to the Philippines, where an estimated 2.5 million people were affected by the floods caused by torrential rains.
PepsiCo contributed $100,000 to the American Red Cross to provide aid for victims of the Australian wildfires. In addition, PepsiCo Australia provided paid leave for associates who volunteered to assist, including volunteer firefighters on staff that helped fight the fires.
PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo committed RMB 10 million ($1.4 million) to assist victims of the Sichuan earthquake that affected hundreds of thousands of individuals and families.
PepsiCo China donated RMB 1 million to the Red Cross Society of China the day after the earthquake. PepsiCo Foundation also made a contribution to the Red Cross for humanitarian assistance. Recognizing the tremendous need for assistance in reconstruction, PepsiCo Foundation has pledged an additional RMB 8.5 million for recovery and rebuilding efforts. Together with the PepsiCo China team, PepsiCo Foundation worked to identify nongovernmental partners and projects for ongoing efforts.
In addition to the RMB 10 million that Pepsi International and PepsiCo Foundation provided, independent Pepsi-Cola bottlers in China made financial contributions exceeding RMB 1.36 million and donated more than 120,000 food and beverage items.
PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo committed $2 million in relief for Pakistan earthquake victims. The contributions included a donation of $1 million to the President’s Relief Fund for Earthquake Victims, established by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, and an additional $1 million contribution to support recovery and rebuilding efforts carried out by the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund, Save the Children, the Citizenship Foundation and SOS Children’s Villages International.
In addition to the $2 million PepsiCo and PepsiCo Foundation provided, independent Pepsi-Cola bottlers in Pakistan made both financial contributions and donations of water and PepsiCo beverages.
PepsiCo donated $500,000 and collaborated with partners to raise an additional $3.8 million to support victims of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. That devastating season included an unprecedented 13 storms, of which three — Stan, Beta and Gamma — ravaged the Central America and Mexico region. The storms took nearly 800 lives, brought suffering to more than 850,000 people and left damages estimated in excess of $1.5 billion.
PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo committed $2 million in disaster relief related to the tsunami in Southeast Asia.
